Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel resigns

Charles Michel, the Belgian Prime Minister in office since 2014, offered his resignation to the country's sovereign, King Philippe, on Tuesday, after losing a vote of no confidence tabled by the socialists and greens in parliament. Global News, December 18, 17.10 hrs: https://globalnews.ca/video/4775127/belgian-prime-minister-offers-resignation-to-king  Mr Michel was seeking backing from left wing parties in opposition to try and hold on government till parliamentary elections scheduled for May, amid the ongoing fierce protests by thousands of Belgian's yellow vests. The protests were sparked by the Belgian's government decision to sign a UN migration pact without consulting the electorate. The popular opinion, especially within the Flemish community, is that this UN pact, signed last Monday in Morocco, will contribute to an increase in migrant numbers entering the country. The Flemish National Party, the N-VA, pulled its support for the government in protest over the decision to sign UN's global compact on migration

The decision to adopt the UN migration pact sparked violent protests in the Belgian capital, Brussels, on Sunday, amid fears it could lead to an increase in immigration.
The UN pact was agreed in July by all 193 UN members except the US, but only 164 formally adopted it at a meeting last Monday in Morocco
It sets out a series of non-binding guidelines aimed at improving global cooperation on migration, combating people trafficking and protecting the human rights of migrants.
Demonstrators clashed with riot police and targeted the EU Commission’s Berlaymont headquarters, which suffered several smash windows.

The UN global pact of migration, an act that was signed by 164 countries on Monday 11th December 2018, was presented and supposedly drawn to bring safety, order and economic growth in the present day mass migration reality. However the USA, Australia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Latvia and Slovakia have not signed the act while countries like Israel, Bulgaria and four more countries are debating whether to quit. This link to the text for the Global Compact for Safe Orderly and Regular Migration: https://www.un.org/pga/72/wp-content/uploads/sites/51/2018/07/migration.pdf provides detailed explanation for those wanting do draw their own conclusions or opinions.

There are two factors which I would like to highlight in the context of Mr Michel's resignation vis-a-vis the signing of the UN act. Should a government of any country decide on taking important decisions such as signing for global acts or treaties in the name of its citizens, only by obtaining parliament approval or should the electorate always be consulted ? Secondly, Mr Michel's act when offering his resignation came either in recognition of the failure to consult the nation before taking such an important decision, or as acceptance of his defeat in parliament or as admittance to contributing in the up rise of uncertainty and disappointment, leading to the instability, as a result of mass protest. The reason behind his resignation offers no contribution to my analyses and opinion but his act of resigning surely does , the responsibility and self accountability practised and showcased by Mr Michel in the situation, is the best example of correct governance. Other head of states, ministers or officials in the public sector, in any country, should take example, Mr Michel is not implied with allegations of corruption or any criminal activity, he self assessed his competence and performance of his role. However, elsewhere, even in the so called democratic states, individuals in high office, proven to have practised corrupt and illicit measures, remain in office !

A Warm and Happy Christmas to all :)
